The ancient forest realm of Sunweald is bordered on two sides by far mightier nations – a precarious situation. At its centre, the Sunweald Palace is home to the Lord Regent and the heir to the throne, together with numerous precious and powerful artefacts. The Palace is protected by the realm’s elite Shields, dedicated to guarding the royal line against all foes.
A group of vicious brigands called the Wildwood Reivers have been stealing arcane artefacts and smuggling them across the borders, out of Sunweald. And the objects they most desire are stored in the mystical Wyrm Vault, hidden away deep in the bones of the earth, within the walls of the Palace itself.
As political and religious tensions mount, Sunweald’s druids prepare to enact rituals for the Summer Solstice – but the Wildwood Reivers and their treacherous allies have other plans. It falls to Briar, the commander of the Shields, to defend the ancient corridors and secret tunnels of the Palace. The odds may be against her, but she’ll see every enemy head adorning a spike or she’ll die trying…

After sitting on this news for a good while, it's all official now and announced by the Bookseller - Angry Robot have bought two more standalone books from me!

Angry Robot has bagged a two-book deal from Cameron Johnston including The Last Shield, a "high-octane adventure" novel.
Publisher Eleanor Teasdale acquired world English language rights from Ed Wilson at Johnson & Alcock in a five- figure deal. The Last Shield will be published August 2024.
"Cameron Johnston is the go-to for fantasy books that cut your throat and break your heart, and The Last Shield is no exception," said Wilson. "It’s a high-octane adventure story told with all his trademark bloodshed, energy and humour."
The Last Shield follows Briar, the commander of the shields, who must defend the palace, and its artefacts, from the "vicious brigands" known as the Wildwood Reivers. The novel is being pitched as "gender-bent ’Die Hard’ set in a mysterious castle".
Johnston’s previous book The Maleficent Seven (Watkins) was published in 2021 but he is also known for the Age of Tyranny duology. He commented: "After the amazing reader response to The Maleficent Seven, I am incredibly happy to be working again with Angry Robot on The Last Shield, best pitched as a bronze-age ’Die Hard’ in a castle.”
Teasdale added: "If you have read Cameron before you know that you are in for nothing but a marvellous time and this book delivers 10 fold — The Last Shield is a one-sit read for me — nigh on impossible to put down."Cameron Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17657618137698423618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-739352259233510348.post-78891599200963497442021-08-10T08:24:00.005+01:002022-07-12T14:25:19.578+01:00The Maleficent Seven published
It's Release Day

I could not be happier that The Maleficent Seven is out today! My new book, The Maleficent Seven, will be published next year by Angry Robot.

https://www.thebookseller.com/news/johnston-returns-angry-robot-third-title-1220963

The synopsis:

Black Herran was a dread demonologist, and the most ruthless general in Essoran. She assembled the six most fearsome warriors to captain her armies: a necromancer, a vampire lord, a demigod, an orcish warleader, a pirate queen and a twisted alchemist. Together they brought the whole continent to its knees... Until the day she abandoned her army, on the eve of total victory.

Forty years later, she must bring her former captains back together for one final stand, in the small town of Tarnbrooke: the last bastion against a fanatical new enemy tearing through the land, intent on finishing the job Black Herran started years before.
Cameron Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17657618137698423618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-739352259233510348.post-51456515236270842262020-09-08T08:59:00.003+01:002020-09-08T08:59:20.107+01:00A new book...
I have signed a contract.
Read Part 1 of 'The Butcher Queen', as I kick off this season of To Be Continued...

I started off this story, but other authors will carry it on and finish it - I have no idea how this story will end, but I can't wait to find out!

The tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus eschew the weakness of flesh, preferring to show their faith in the Omnissiah by replacing their organics with machine parts. As well as religious, this is practical – disease can't affect the machine… or can it? On the agri-world of Dundas II, Tech-Priest Viridan Shale is dealing with a deadly outbreak brought to the world by the Death Guard. Nothing is safe as the contagion affects flesh and metal alike. With both biology and machinery under threat, she must find a way to defeat the plague and survive. The arrival of Iron Hands Space Marines – who similarly strive to overcome the weakness of flesh – may prove key to the world's salvation… if they are willing to aid Shale and her allies.

If you are interested in seeing me at Worldcon in Dublin this year, all the details of confirmed events are listed below:

Introduction to grimdark
16 Aug 2019, Friday 18:00 - 18:50, Wicklow Hall-1 (CCD)
Grimdark is a fantasy subgenre defined, amongst other things, by its cynical outlook and flawed protagonists. The term was originally pejorative, stemming from the Warhammer 40,000 description: ‘In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war’ – but many authors have turned the insult around and claimed it as their own. The panel will offer a brief introduction to the history and tropes of grimdark fantasy as well as reading recommendations.
Devin Madson (M), Elliot Craggs, Kim ten Tusscher, Cameron Johnston, Jenn Lyons

It’s all gone to shit: grimdark worldbuilding
18 Aug 2019, Sunday 10:00 - 10:50, Wicklow Room-2 (CCD)
Let’s build a dark and dreadful world, and then make it worse. Join our super-serious panelists as they discuss the darker aspects of worldbuilding in fantasy.
Robert Corvus (M), Anna Smith Spark, Cameron Johnston, Joe Abercrombie, R.F. Kuang

One year ago this week my first published book, The Traitor God, appeared on shelves all across the world, rubbing shoulders with authors I've admired for years. It's still such a strange and marvellous feeling to see my book in shops and libraries. Lifelong dream achieved :)

With my second book, God of Broken Things, out next week, it's got me thinking about the future. I have a rough draft of a new standalone dark fantasy novel finished and a couple of other projects in a formative stage. There's never any guarantee with publishing, but I really enjoy writing so anything more than that is a bonus.

Writing is a solitary business, or so people say, but I haven't found that to be the case since I started writing seriously 10(!!!) years ago now. From hobby writers to published pro's, editors, agents, bloggers and reviewers, and the whole writing community, I've had a lot of support and encouragement along the way.

Cheers to you all!

I would have thought that it might be easier the second time around, but apparently not.

Fortunately the first few advance reviews of God of Broken Things have been good. Phew! *wipes sweat off my brow*

The amazing Nick T Borrelli just posted a truly amazing Five ***** review of God of Broken Things. And no, not's not a censored sweary word...

Check it out below:

Cameron Johnston is an author who writes exactly the types of books that I really enjoy. Heavy on the magic, violently action-packed, with plenty of thrills punctuated by characters who don't always behave the way you expect them to. Cameron's first book in his Age of Tyranny series The Traitor God was one of my favorite reads of 2018. It immediately grabbed my attention when I first read it and I've been eagerly anticipating book two so that I could get right back into this amazing world and story. Luckily for me I was able to procure an advance copy of GOD OF BROKEN THINGS...
